WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF biologY AT SKIDMORE

Professor Bernie and student researcherOur dynamic department emphasizes one-on-one mentoring of students by faculty in hands-on 研究合作 这通常会导致 海报展示 在专业会议上 学生合著的出版物. Biologists develop and test ideas that deepen our understanding of life. 在课程 and in 研究合作 with our faculty, students work in our laboratories, 的 火博体育显微成像中心 还有我们的500多英亩 北部森林 investigating molecular and cellular information and processes, studying 的 structure and function of cells and whole organisms, and exploring behavior and ecology.  In consultation with a faculty advisor, students design programs of study to meet individual 兴趣和目标.

The Skidmore Young Scholars Cell Biology Institute
2023年7月

The Young Scholars Cell Biology Institute is a major outreach initiative for high school students sponsored by 的 National Science Foundation. 今年夏天的项目 ran as a day camp from 8:45am until 4:45pm from July 10-14, 2023 for 26 high school students from 萨拉托加温泉市, Saratoga Central Catholic, Shenendehowa, South Glens Falls, Lake George, Northwood, Emma Willard, and Schuylerville high schools. 这 program provided 的 students with comprehensive hands-on learning in various areas of cell biology including microscopy, physiology, neuroscience, bacteriology, plant 生物学和疾病机制. In addition to experimental work, students also participated in acquiring and interpreting data from technologies such as inverted light microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning 电子显微镜, and transmission 电子显微镜.

这 program is part of a NSF grant awarded to professor of Biology, 大卫Domozych,题为“Spatiotemporal mapping of 的 membrane trafficking networks involved in secretion and autophagy in 的 unicellular zygnematophyte, Penium margaritaceum” from 的 NSF-Molecular and Cell Biology Program (NSF- MCB拨款2129443). It was organized with 的 assistance of Lily Kozel, Microscopy Technology & 研究 协调员, 乔西Loricco, Post-doctorate 研究 Scientist, Kaylee Bagdan (Class of ’24) and Skidmore faculty.

Professor 大卫Domozych receives a $573,372 grant through 的 Molecular and Cellular Biology Division of 的 National Science Foundation

大卫Domozych was recently awarded a grant through 的 Molecular and Cellular Biology Division of 的 National Science Foundation (NSF-MCB 2129443) to support research for 的 project entitled, "Spatiotemporal mapping of 的 membrane trafficking networks involved in secretion and autophagy in 的 unicellular zygnematophyte, Penium margaritaceum". 这 3-year grant for $573,372 will analyze 的 unique secretory system of 的 model charophyte, Penium, and provide insight into 的 evolution of land plants and 的 ways plants make important extracellular products. 补助金也支持夏季 research activities for undergraduates and 的 Young Scholars Cell Biology program, a summer program for local high school students to explore cell biology and microscopy.
