Candace Carlucci Backus '66 呸!咄!奖 in Honor of Student Academic Achievement in the First-Year Experience

The First-Year Experience Prize, supported with the generosity of Candace Carlucci Backus ’66, will be awarded annually to up to three projects by first-year students in recognition of exceptional scholarly or artistic achievement in the fall’s Scribner 研讨会.

During the spring semester, the First-Year Experience Office will solicit nominations from the previous fall’s Scribner Seminar instructors. Nominations may be either for individual or collaborative projects, and may include any kind of exemplary work – written, visual, or performative.

Maia Haiduc-Dale (’26), Natalie Jones (’26), and Sayuri (Saya) Pfeiffer (‘26) are recipients of the 2022-23 Candace Carlucci Backus Prize for their outstanding work in their 2023年秋季 Scribner 研讨会.

Maia Haiduc-Dale, for their painting and essay "Science in Fiction" from the Scribner Seminar Dynamics of Chaos, with Professor Rachel Roe-Dale

Natalie Jones, for her stop motion video 我们成长 from the Scribner Seminar Picturing Time, with Professor Sarah Sweeney

Sayuri (Saya) Pfeiffer, for her paper "Liberalism Recontextualized: An Examination of the Applications of Liberalism in the Black Nationalist and Pan-Africanist Movements of the 1970's" from the Scribner Seminar 自由主义, with Professor Jennifer Delton
